Set up email notifications on a Synology NAS

Synology DSM can email you about backups, storage health and security events — but Gmail and Microsoft 365 no longer accept a plain device password. Use a custom SMTP server pointed at DeviceSMTP so those notifications keep arriving.

Step by step

Where to find the SMTP settings

The exact labels vary by model and firmware version — use these as a guide and check your manual if a menu name differs.

  1. In DSM, open Control Panel → Notification → Email.
  2. Enable email notifications and choose Custom SMTP server (not Gmail).
  3. Enter the DeviceSMTP server and port below, enable authentication (SMTP AUTH), and paste your per-device username and password.
  4. Set the sender address to your DeviceSMTP username, then use Send a test mail to confirm it works.
Good to knowYou’ll send to the recipient you confirmed when you created your free DeviceSMTP account. Each device gets its own login, so you can revoke this one without affecting anything else.

Settings to enter

SMTP serversend.devicesmtp.com
Port587 (STARTTLS) or 465 (SSL/TLS)
EncryptionSTARTTLS or SSL/TLS — TLS 1.2 or newer
UsernameYour per-device login, e.g. k7mq2x@devicesmtp.com
PasswordThe 20-character password shown once when you add the device
From / senderThe same as the username

Your exact username and one-time password appear in your account when you add the device.

Troubleshooting

Common problems & fixes

Most issues on Synology come down to one of these.

Authentication failed / 535

Double-check the username and password are the exact per-device values from your account (the password is shown only once). Re-create the device login if unsure.

Connection timed out / refused

The network may be blocking the port. Try 465 (SSL/TLS) if 587 fails, and make sure the device can reach the internet.

TLS or certificate error

Switch the encryption mode between STARTTLS (587) and SSL/TLS (465). Very old firmware that can’t do TLS 1.2 won’t connect — check for a firmware update.

Test email never arrives

Make sure you are sending to the recipient you confirmed on your DeviceSMTP account. Mail to any other address is declined by design.
