How it works

How DeviceSMTP works, end to end

DeviceSMTP is a specialist SMTP gateway for physical devices. Point your hardware at it using standard SMTP settings — no code, no firmware changes — and get reliable email delivery for every device.

The four steps

From “send failed” to delivered in four steps

DeviceSMTP sits between your hardware and the recipient’s mail server. You keep standard SMTP; we handle reliable delivery.

1

Create your DeviceSMTP account

Sign up and get your gateway hostname together with a set of SMTP credentials. There is nothing to install and no code to write.

2

Configure your device

Open your device’s email or notification settings and enter the SMTP hostname, port, encryption and credentials — the same fields your hardware already has.

3

Your device sends email

Your printer, camera or controller connects over TLS and sends mail exactly as before. DeviceSMTP relays each message reliably, with automatic retries.

4

Monitor delivery & activity

Watch every message, delivery and bounce in your dashboard, with a timestamp and status for each one, so you can prove a notification was sent.

On the device

What you enter on the device

These are the generic SMTP fields every mail-capable device exposes. Fill them in once and your hardware is ready to send.

SMTP server / hostYour DeviceSMTP hostname, e.g. smtp.devicesmtp.com (illustrative)
Port587 (STARTTLS), 465 (SSL/TLS) or 2525

The hostname shown is an example. Use the exact gateway hostname from your DeviceSMTP account — it appears alongside your credentials once you sign in. See the SMTP configuration docs for per-device walkthroughs.

In practice

Where the settings live on real hardware

The same four fields apply across your fleet. Here is where to find them — and what each device sends once it is connected.

Network Printer

Most multifunction printers have a “Scan to Email” or SMTP screen in their admin console. Enter the gateway details there, and scanned documents, toner-low alerts and usage reports reach the right inbox every time.

See the network printer guide

Surveillance Camera

IP cameras and NVRs keep SMTP settings under their event or notification menu. Point them at DeviceSMTP and motion alerts, tamper warnings and snapshot emails get delivered the moment they matter.

See the surveillance camera guide

Industrial / PLC Equipment

PLCs, RTUs and SCADA gateways send email from their alarm or messaging module. With the gateway configured, fault alarms, threshold breaches and shift reports leave the plant floor reliably.

See the industrial / plc equipment guide

Then: monitor everything

Confirm every message reached its destination

Once your devices are sending, DeviceSMTP records what happens to each message so delivery is something you can verify, not assume.

Email activity log

A searchable, per-device timeline of every message and its delivery status.

Bounce monitoring

See rejected and bounced mail right away, with the reason the receiving server gave.

Usage & statistics

Track volume and delivery rate per device and across your whole fleet.
